Transylvania – Siebenbürgen

In a land full of mystery and fascinating legends that have inspired famous writers, guarded by the Carpathian chain, you can discover Transylvania. Built in the 12th century and also the most important Saxon administrative unit of the time, the city of Sibiu dates back to 1223, under the name Hermannstadt. Gaining the name of “European Capital of Europe” in 2007, it is one of the most popular tourist areas in Transylvania. Being able to keep its culture and history alive through the narrow streets, paved with stone, rich architecture and its restored buildings, Sibiu offers an authentic medieval experience to all its tourists, starting from the first step.

Known as Vlad Dracul’s birthplace, the famous Dracula, Sighișoara extends its roots even in ancient Roman times and manages to keep its medieval fabled and legendary atmosphere. It is located in Mureș county, having 9 towers preserved since the XII – XIV centuries – The Ironworkers ‘Tower, the Tobacco Tower, the Towers’ Tower, the Furrier‘s Tower, the Tailors ‘Tower, the Butchers’ Tower, the Shoemaker’s Tower and the Clock Tower. Only 110 steps in the most famous tower among them, namely the Clock Tower, separate you from a unique and a complete panorama of the city.

The Medias Fortress has its origins of the name from the hungarian word “medgyes” which means “bitter cherry”, but is also known as the Fortress of Light. Everywhere you will discover the symbol of the celestial star – from the gates over which the sun rays, to the ceilings and even on windows, welcoming you at every step.

One of the most imposing and fortified Saxon cities – Bistrita, is among the oldest cities you can cross in the Transylvania region, in the north of Romania. Being inhabited since Neolithic times, it preserves from the culture and architecture of the glory days through the Cooper Tower which spans 3 levels and inside which you can discover a fascinating exhibition of medieval dolls, as well as the Evangelical Church, having the highest tower in the whole the country.

Found in the 12th century, during the Middle Ages, Sebes was an important political center, growing a rich and fruitful economy. Located in Sebeș, Alba County, you can still explore 4 of the 8 remaining towers of guilds, important relics of the past that give you a brief visual history of the region’s conflicts.

Leaving behind valuable buildings such as the Church of Saint Nicholas and Black Church, as well as the fortified churches Prejmer and Harman, every year in August you can celebrate with locals Days of the Fortress, a festival dedicated entirely to the fortresses!

Perhaps the most frequented and famous medieval city in Romania, Brașov attracts thousands of tourists every year due to the impeccable preservation of the architecture, culture and medieval history that permeates the entire fortress as well as the city. Situated at the foot of the Tâmpa hill, the Brasov Fortress preserves its city with the same ancient pride even now. Bastions, towers, walls and buildings seem to have been torn down from the past, waiting to be crossed and seen at any time.

Just 65km from Brasov on the way to Sighișoara, there is the last of the 7 famous fortresses, the Rupea fortress, which you can see even before reaching its interior, due to its huge and dominant position. One of the oldest fortifications, Rupea preserves important elements such as the Tower of the Gate, the Tower of Servants and the Tower of Slănină, which restore the medieval and harmonious atmosphere kept over the years.
